This is an add-on to generate voice from text and add it to Anki cards, using local AI Text to Speech Piper. After downloading an AI voice from the options, you can quickly generate an AI voice locally from the selected text or notes. Currently about 25 languages are supported.

Select a language and a voice from the options of the add-on, and download the voice file. (A single voice is about 60MB-100MB) You can play the voice from the menu by selecting the text in the reviewer and right-clicking, or you can save the voice to a field on the selected card. If you select multiple notes in the browser you can bulk add audio from the field.

Edit 2025-12-31: This explanation is outdated. I added a new feature to convert wav files to mp3 using Anki alone, unless an error occurs, it will auto save as mp3 even without ffmpeg.
The default audio file format saved is Wav. To save as mp3 you will need FFmpeg. If you already have FFmpeg installed on your laptop, the audio will be automatically converted to mp3. (Wav is large in size, while Mp3 is relatively small because it is compressed.)

Note Not sure if it works on MacOS. (it has not been tested yet) Each voice file is about 60MB - 100MB in size. Some languages are not supported. (e.g. Japanese. Still under development by the developers of Piper). So far no TTS other than Piper has been incorporated. (the popular add-ons HypertTTS and AwsomeTTS support most types of TTS, so I think there is not much need to develop them.) What are the advantages of Piper? Piper is an open source project so it is free to use AI natural speech locally. Most of Piper’s voices are Creative Commons licensed so you are free to redistribute and use the voices generated (e.g. commercial use or distribution of Windows or Siri TTS may be prohibited). Is there the potential for human readable file name generation rather than random string of unique characters? The selected text becomes the name of the file. Not using filenames is intentional, e.g. duplicate phrases could cause files to be overwritten, or in some languages, special characters might cause unexpected errors. So making it optional might be convenient, I’ll look into it.

the program is amazing! i’t just that I don’t know if this problem i’m having has anything to do with my settings but when there is an apostrophe in a sentences it says N HASH X 27 T, and also it does not distingues between: lives, in she lives here and lives, like, their lives are important.. it’s always like the first example, Comment from author Hi thanks for the feedback! Great addon but there are some bugs and glitches to fix. Many times it starts to speak gibberish or maybe the language of AI 😂 and that irritates me the most, and the problem is consistent with the text. Possible cause and fix: Based on my experience with the bug/glitch I think it is caused because of html formatting. I have become much more sure that it is the cause of the issue after testing my theory which fixed the issue. The simple solution is before feeding the text to the AI clear all the

Hi, great work on the add-on, it’s very helpful!
I have a suggestion for a future update. Would it be possible to add a keyboard shortcut to automate saving the audio?
For example, I could select the text in the “Sentence” field, press a shortcut, and it would automatically save the audio to the “SentenceAudio” field using the last selected voice. This would make the workflow much faster.

Hi, great work! Good addition. I need to add pauses between words. For example, a “goal/frame/outline” instead of a slash, so that there are pauses, maybe meta tags or something else? Can you help?
