AI Vocabulary Extractor
Automatically extract vocabulary from books and documents and turn them into Anki flashcards using OpenAI’s GPT models.
Works best with short chunks of text like a few pages or a chapter.
How it works
Open the Tools menu and select ‘Text to Vocabulary (OpenAI)’. Choose a .txt, .pdf, or .epub file, configure your options, and the addon will:
Extract the text (with optional chapter or page-range selection for EPUB and PDF files) Send the text to OpenAI in chunks and ask it to identify interesting beginner, intermediate, and advanced vocabulary Create flashcards in your chosen deck, tagged beginner, intermediate, or advanced Skip any words that already exist as cards in the target deck
Each card has the word on one side and its translation on the other. You can choose which language appears on the front.

Requirements
An OpenAI API key is required. You can obtain one by creating an account at platform.openai.com. Enter your key in the dialog each time you import — it is saved locally in Anki’s addon config so you only need to enter it once.
The addon uses the gpt-4o-mini model by default, which is fast and inexpensive. Processing a full novel typically costs a few cents.
Note: This addon sends the text of your files to OpenAI’s servers for processing. Do not use it with confidential documents.
