Using the Backlog Calculator

1. Open Anki and navigate to the Tools menu.
2. Locate and click on the new option, “Calculate Backlog,” available in the dropdown.
3. A dialog box will appear requesting the exact name of the deck for which you wish to calculate the backlog. Type in the name and click OK.
4. A calendar popup will then request a target date. Choose the desired date and click the OK button.
5. The add-on will process your input and display a message detailing the current card backlog. This information includes the estimated number of cards you need to review per day to complete the deck by the chosen target date.

With these steps, you can effectively utilize the Backlog Calculator add-on to manage your study schedule according to your backlog.

Important Notes

• Ensure that the deck name entered is an exact match with an existing deck in Anki. Any discrepancies might lead to errors.
• The add-on includes all due cards from the specified deck and its sub-decks in the backlog calculation.
• The recommended number of reviews per day is an estimate and might need adjustment according to your review speed and other variables.

Additional Tips for Managing Your Backlog

In my personal experience with tackling my Anki card backlog, I’ve found a few strategies that might be helpful:

• Stop doing new cards. If your goal is to reduce your backlog significantly, it can be helpful to stop adding new cards temporarily, or at least limit the number of new cards you study each day.

• Create a separate ‘Backlog Keeper’ deck. Each day, move the cards you’ve reviewed into this deck. You can find these cards in the Browse section. Use the ‘Overdue’ filter (which adds rated:1 to the search bar) to show only the cards you’ve reviewed that day. You can change the number in rated:x to show cards reviewed within the past x days.

• Review the ‘Backlog Keeper’ deck daily. This ensures that you maintain your progress and don’t forget the cards you’ve already reviewed.

• Use the Backlog Calculator add-on’s average review number as a guide. The add-on provides an average number of reviews you should aim for each day to reach your goal. Remember, this is based on unique cards you’ve reviewed, so it doesn’t change if you review more or less on a specific day. Try to stick to this average to steadily reduce your backlog.
