Updated version of https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/2923601993 to run on both Anki 2.0 and Anki 2.1
Display a record of a chess position in Forsyth–Edwards Notation as a chess board.
The FEN record has to be complete (with active player, castling &c.) and it has to be enclosed in [fen]/[/fen] tags.
This is the way that can be used on AnkiDroid and, apparently by some old Anki1 add-on as well.
Example: Just put [fen]rnbqkbnr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RNBQKBNR w KQkq - 0 1[/fen] on a card.
This add-on does the display without any images. When you don’t see the chess pieces you should install a font with them.

Did not work

This does not work with FEN given in the example, the format is different. The following worked though “rnbqkbnr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RNBQKBNR” - only the board part and no wrapping into “[fen]”

It is no longer supported, but it doesn’t have to be. Even if coding is complete magic to you, you still can put chess puzzles to your Anki cards. The foolproof method is: use the chess.com editor and embed the diagrams by copying the link, and pasting it into Html editor in anki (just click Ctrl+Shift+X and paste the whole link with Html commands into it) :)

Fantastic add-on and the reason I use Anki. Unfortunately has broken with latest release so I hope for an update soon.
