Migaku Development Cycles Migaku develops add-ons in 6-month development cycles. For the duration of a development cycle, add-ons are designed for the latest stable version of Anki that was available at the beginning of that cycle. At the end of a development cycle, all Migaku add-ons are upgraded to the latest stable version of Anki. Please note that development of the new updated versions of the add-ons begins at the end of the current cycle, once all Add-ons have been updated the new cycle then begins.
<b>Why Migaku uses a Development Cycle:</b> ● By not needing to constantly update add-ons each time a new version of Anki is released, we’re better able to stay focused on new projects. ● When everyone is using the same version of Anki and the same version of the add-ons, bug fixing can proceed more efficiently. ● Because users only have to update their set-up once every 6 months, they can more easily stay focused on their studies. ● We surveyed our users and found that the vast majority approved of a 6-month development cycle.

Version Info - Please Read! The Anki 2.1.14 - 2.1.16 version of the add-on has been left here so that people on older versions of Anki may continue to use it. However we do not offer support for that version of the add-on and it does not offer all of the features, improvements, and fixes in the Anki 2.1.22 version.
###Linux Users### Unfortunately Linux is not officially supported and the add-on may not work properly under all environments. Community fixes may be available however, so please reference the GitHub repository below.
About the Add-on The Migaku Japanese add-on provides a variety of features for improving the ease and efficiency of Japanese study, some of the most notable being automatic generation of native audio, kanji readings, and pitch accent information, as well as automatic pitch accent coloring. It’s extremely flexible and customizable, but also comes ready to use out of the box. The add-on largely works through JavaScript, which allows all of the core features to function on every platform, including AnkiWeb, Anki Mobile, and AnkiDroid.
Migaku Japanese does not conflict with the Japanese Support add-on and is fully compatible with MorphMan. Please make sure you’re using the newest version of Anki 2.1 before installing.

Audio Some of the add-on’s features rely on a set of audio files which must be downloaded separately from the add-on. Please download these audio files from the link below and place the “accentAudio” folder within the “user_files” folder inside of Migaku Japanese’s add-on folder. See the usage guide liked above for more detailed instructions.
MAC USERS Please use this software to unzip the “accentAudio” folder in order to avoid encoding issues and unplayable audio files.

It seems to work sort of but is very awkward. Seems like a great project once its ready for primetime. I really struggled with setup and following the tutorials. There are three separate pieces of software, the Anki integration seems off and when I went to the discord there was an active conversation about whether or not Migaku should remove antiquated references to the Third Reich ( https://discord.com/channels/752293144917180496/1134972199623729223/1137131933059522570). I’m excited about this

Advert pop up on launch? This is a widely used open source program and not suited for self promotion of any one small developer. Also updates seem to be vastly out of date compared to other addons, and admitting so at the top of the page does not detract from the decreasing usability as it falls behind the rest of the addons needed to maintain a productive anki experience. If i have to choose between using literally every other addon vs migaku japanese that is a laughably easy decision. I heard

Although I wanted people to be civil and give a fair chance to the addon despite the poor handling of the issue with Matt, I have been consistently disappointed with this addon since that time. It started with his intrusive use of the addon as a platform to get his point of view out by making a popup with links to videos about the drama. What used to be a nice and functional MIA plugin seems to have become convoluted with numerous hoops to jump through. The source page in Github has not been kept up-to-date (last was over 12 months ago), Linux users are 2nd class citizens, and downgrading Anki version to make use of this is just one of many hurdles that can create user-side issues. All this creates a negative experience of what is a quite nice extension at its core.

In my opinion, you really need to rethink this whole development cycle thing. Users shouldn’t be forced to use a 6 (or 9) month old version of Anki just so they can use Migaku addons. If you want to release new features and/or major addons changes on a cycle, that’s fine, but existing addon functionality should be fixed for new versions of Anki as soon as reasonably possible. Edit: Still a great add-on, but point 1 explained below is really making this add-on a diva for me. Whenever I want to change something it’s takes me up to an hour to fix everything back to normal again because the add-on doesn’t allow me to edit just one template.
I also noticed that clozes don’t really work. You have to generate the readings first and then apply the cloze afterwards. If this can be fixed in a future update I will be hyped!

I really enjoy this addon because it just makes sentence mining and learning so easy with anki.
But with the most recent update is there anyway of disabeling the new card template? It is in my opinion very distracting from reviewing the card itself and it also now is different from all of my cards made, which is also really distracting :(

While I enjoy the addons the authors have created, they clearly don’t understand the spirit or the legalities of FOSS software.
You don’t just change the licence of GPL licensed software. As the TOS of AnkiWeb states:
“As add-ons extend the computer version, they must be licensed under the AGPL3 or a compatible license. If you do not explicitly state a license, it will be assumed to be AGPL3.”
That is, all your add-ons cannot be released under your changed license(s), as they are extensions
