Transliteration of Indic script to Roman characters, for learners who have trouble reading the script.
Example: भारतिय > bhāratiya
Can be used for most Indic language such as Hindi, Bengali, Punjabi, Tamil, …
- New note types designed for inputting Indic text such as Devanagari for Hindi.
- After you type in a word or phrase into the Expression field and hit tab, Anki will automatically generate the transliteration for you.
- Select the notes in your browser that you want transliterated and use Edit>Bulk-add Transliterations to transliterate all notes.
To use this add-on:
- Install it, and restart Anki
- Click “Add” in the main window
- Click the type button on the top left
- When a new window appears, click Manage
- When a new window appears, click Add
- Select the Devanagari note type you’d like to use, and then close the extra windows. If you are planning to learn a different language, use it as a template.
- Type devanagari into the Expression field, then hit tab to change to another field, and the Reading field will be automatically populated.
- If you’re importing in bulk, you’ll need to use Edit>Bulk-add Transliterations to transliterate all notes.
This add-on provides three note types:
- Devanagari: will present an expression for the question, and show you the reading and meaning on the back
- Devanagari (and reversed card): in addition to the first card, it will also present a card that shows you the meaning and requires you to remember the expression and reading.
- Devanagari (optional reversed card): will always add recognition, and add a recall card too if you put any text in the “Add Recall” field
To use transliteration generation with your own note types and languages, please edit the configuration for the addon. This includes changing the transliteration method used. Please read the information provided with the addon configuration window carefully.
For Devanagari usage, the settings are already in place:
- Ensure you have two fields named exactly Expression and Reading.
- Ensure the note type contains “Devanagari” or “Hindi” in its name, eg “My Textbook Hindi”
- When adding cards, input devanagari into the Expression field and hit tab to have the Reading field populated.
This addon has taken a lot from the Japanese Support addon.
If there’s enough demand, I will create an Anki 2.0 version of this addon.
